That is, until he made the politically incorrect gaffe heard \u2018round the world.\u201cLaken Riley\u2014an innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal,\u201d he\u00a0said, addressing those who are blaming the recent murder of 22 year-old nursing student Laken Riley on Biden\u2019s lax immigration policies at the border, given that the suspected killer is an undocumented man from Venezuela.\u201cBut how many thousands of people are killed by legals?\u201d he continued. \u201cTo her parents, I say, my heart goes out to you\u2014having lost children myself, I understand.Democrats and immigration advocates alike are up in arms over his painfully outdated choice of language, going on talk shows and social media platforms to air their outrage over the fact the president used the term \u201cillegal\u201d to describe an undocumented immigrant,\u00a0<\/a>particularly when the\u00a0Biden administration\u00a0made a point of\u00a0removing the term \u201cillegal alien\u201d from government communications\u00a0at the beginning of his term.\u201cManipulating a personal tragedy for political gain in this way is dangerous,\u201d the National Immigrant Justice Center wrote in a\u00a0post\u00a0on X, formerly known as Twitter. \u201cConflating immigration status with criminality is racist and disgusting.\u201dBut as important as language is\u2014and as hurtful as the president\u2019s particular choice of language was in that moment\u2014we should resist the tempting urge to feed the outrage machine, and instead consider what makes immigration illegal in the first place.\u201c\u2026not so very long ago\u2014the turn of the twentieth century to be precise\u2014the U.S.-Mexico border was just a line in the sand, marked with concrete blocks.\u201dAs Biden mentioned during his State of the Union address, during his first day in office he signed an Executive Order\u00a0overturning Trump\u2019s infamous Muslim ban\u00a0and vowed to put together a task force to reunite separated families. However, he failed to mention that he also\u00a0deported more than 2,700 Haitian immigrants\u00a0back to a country deemed too violent for U.S. citizens to visit, and kept pandemic-era policies like Title 42 in place long after they were necessary to protect public health.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
