Donald Trump\u2019s team is reportedly creating a legal defence fund that will assist in paying for his allies\u2019 legal fees as the number of investigations and indictments against the ex-president increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fund, supposedly set to be led by longtime Trump advisor Michael Glassner, is thought to be called the Patriort Legal Defense Fund Inc, two people familiar with the matter told\u00a0The New York Times\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0CNN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Since leaving office, Mr Trump has been subject to several investigations and is currently facing two indictments, one at the federal level and one in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Since January, Mr Trump\u2019s political action committee (PAC), Save America, has\u00a0reportedly\u00a0spent more than $40m on legal fees for him and his former staffers or allies who have served as witnesses or provided testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is unclear what, or who, the new fund will cover, though one witness told The New York Times<\/em> it will not cover Mr Trump\u2019s own legal bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A spokesperson for Mr Trump, Steven Cheung, told\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0that to combat \u201cheinous actions\u201d from the\u00a0Department of Justice\u00a0(DoJ) a new legal defence fund \u201dwill help pay for their legal fees to ensure they have representation against unlawful harassment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mr Cheung claimed the DoJ has \u201ctargetted innocent Americans associated with President Trump\u201d and the fund would \u201cprotect these innocent people from financial ruin and prevent their lives from being completely destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Many of Mr Trump\u2019s former White House staffers, as well as his personal assistants or staffers, have been called upon to testify regarding the many investigations he faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most recently, Mr Trump\u2019s former personal aid, Walt Nauta, and a Mar-a-Lago property manager, Carlos De Oliveira, were listed as the ex-president\u2019s co-defendants in a federal\u00a0indictment\u00a0regarding the mishandling of classified documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mr Trump may be facing\u00a0another indictment regarding his alleged involvement in trying to overturn the 2020 election\u00a0which ultimately led to a riot at the Capitol on 6 January 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is also being\u00a0investigated in Fulton County, Georgia\u00a0for his alleged interference with the 2020 election results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These soon-to-be-concluded investigations come months after Mr Trump was indicted on 34 counts related to falsifying business records in New York and federally indicted on 37 counts related to his handling of classified documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mr Trump has maintained his innocence in all the investigations and indictments, claiming he is a political target and that a \u201cwitch hunt\u201d is being conducted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Donald Trump’s team is reportedly creating a legal defence fund that will assist in paying
