this research explores the specific mechanisms of how sensitive words are perceived, recoded and developed as a series of discourse practices by Chinese netizens. On this basis, we propose the concept of the Sensitive Word Culture, which may be an important but uninvestigated part of the digital cultural practices of Chinese netizens. It includes both narrow and broad political understandings. On the one hand, the Sensitive Word Culture refers to the practice of political participation in which netizens contend with censorship and voice their opinions. On the other hand, it has the potential to transcend the censorship system within a nation-state, and to participate in the online expression of various segments of Chinese social media as part of the everyday politics of its values and normative systems.
Through these analyses, we would like to emphasize that as a key concept, the Sensitive Word Culture goes some way to explaining how Chinese netizens devise productive discourse strategies in social media (and more broadly in the Chinese Internet) censorship and, in over a decade of evolution with censorship technology (AI-driven), develop as a collection that spans and integrates different forms and genres into a constantly changing linguistic resource. This research responds to the particularity of Chinese social media ecology in terms of discourse and language practices (Fitzgerald et al., 2022), and also contributes to understanding the relationship between Internet censorship, discourse strategy and cultural production globally.
